I am looking to get this primarily as a media player. I have a subscription to Xbox Music. Can I use this service on this phone? Can I listen to the music I have downloaded through the subscription? Thanks guys.

If, by subscription, you mean the Xbox Music Pass, then yes it's integrated with the phone. The Xbox Music Pass lets you listen to all the music you've purchased through Xbox Music and that which you've "uploaded" to the Xbox Music cloud through the cloud. If you want actual copies of the music on your 520, you can download them or cable sync them.
