How good does the wvga screen look compared to a super amoled?

Interesting that someone should ask this now, because my best friend just got a 521 and came over yesterday. I have a 920 and 810 and I compared all three screen against each other. Personally, my favorite is the 810's because of the AMOLED. Colors are so much deeper and just gorgeous. I prefer the 920's screen to the 521's, but the 810's is definitely the best looking. The screen on the 521 is a bit too light for my liking... Don't get me wrong, though, it's a great phone.

It's a 4 inch screen on a $100 or less phone, for me if it turns on and i can use it it's plenty good enough. To really compare it to anything else is impossible as there is nothing else this good at this price point.

How does it compare? It doesn't. Is it acceptable on an inexpensive handset? Yes, absolutely.

The 520/521 is what it is, an entry level handset that blows away anything else at that price point. If you have 100 to spend you'll not find a better phone.

The screen looks fine but without the clear black polarizers outside use is not as good as the others.

As others have said, for the price of the phone, the screen is more than acceptable. I am also amazed when I read comments about the 'low resolution' 800 x 480 display. I still remember having an iPaq Pocket PC with a display that wasn't much smaller with a resolution of just 320 x 240 (ie the Nokia 521 display has FIVE times the resolution lol) yet I managed to get by and even read a couple of ebooks on it

I do miss my dark black, red is red amoled screen from my old focus flash. But I am more than happy with 521 display. Hope we get display color adjustment in gdr2/amber update.

How is it in direct sun light?

Not very good. You can just barely see the red bar to answer a call. Actually I know where it is so I can answer a call. If you shade it with your body or your hand you can navigate around your phone book to make calls but it is not nice. Before Christmas I was at a Nokia kiosk near Boston and they had a very bright booth to simulate direct sunlight and show off the clear black technology. The 920 820 and 810 were all very usable in the booth.

I have to agree about the very poor readability in sunlight, especially considerng I live in an area with a lot of bright sunlight. This is the one downfall of the phone, though for the price I can live with it for the time being. It's definitely one feature that would help push me towards the higher end phones later on, if I find Windows Phone OS still continues to agree with me

Two issues with 520 screen,Sunlight readability and excessive screen smudging with fingers.
A decent screen protector is a must.

yes, I have a cheap matte screen protector bought from ebay for about 2$.

I was using my focus flash today in direct sunlight and noticed the smudges and nothing else. I guess it's not going to make such a difference if i get the 521 or 520.

WVGA is a screen resolution (800x480). [Super]Amoled is a display technology (as opposed to various LCD types). The two are not mutually exclusive.

The 520/521 uses an IPS (arguably the best type of display) LCD display, but one of relatively poor quality (worse than average viewing angles, poor contrast/black levels, poor color reproduction). WVGA resolution is much lower than what's available on today's flagship phones (it's about halfway between the original iPhone's 320x480 and the iPhone 4's 640x960; alternatively, it's half as many pixels as the iPhone 5).

That said, it's pretty impressive for a $99/$149 phone.
