I got headphones with my Nokia Lumia 520 and gave them to my dad who at the time was using my Nokia 6303i classic phone while his Samsung Galaxy s4 was being repaired and when he connected them they didn't work. So after a while I pushed them into the jack slowly and the phone picked them up and worked perfectly. You see sometimes if you connect them too fast the phone doesn't "find" or "register" them on the phone. Whereas if you connect them slowly the phone will pick them up and then you can use them as normal.

This do not happen with lumia 630 or 530, if you only connect them halfway (not 'till the end) they work, but work bad, sound is terrible (yes, more than the "normal" terrible sound of WH-102), but that's because they are obviously not well connected, now when you push then all the way down (slow or fast) the phone use the external speaker, do not detect headsets
I try with some big sony headphones (over the ear, with diadem, which I hate) and they worked well, strangely, the connector of those have only two lines, like this:
