AT&T 635 on Cricket?

Hello all,

Still not a new WP user... yet. I have a few weeks of my current Virgin Mobile month left, so I've still been looking around, reading reviews, and checking out the forums.

The MS online store is offering a free shell with a purchase of either the T-Mobile or AT&T 635. Would the no-contract AT&T Lumia 635 work on Cricket with a Cricket SIM? It's cheaper ($99.99 vs. 129.99) and comes in a better color (black instead of white). MS is also offering a free shell combo for a limited time, so I would get orange or green - for free. The 630s look back in stock on Cricket for 'free' after rebate, but the capped HSPA speeds are a bit of a downer to me.

And this is perhaps a trickier question, but would an AT&T device on Cricket be eligible for the AT&T unlock? I've never heard of a prepaid carrier unlocking phones, but since it is an AT&T phone, I wonder if anyone has used it on Cricket and then unlocked (I'm guessing more likely people go from AT&T>Cricket, not Cricket>elsewhere). So if Cricket's performance is subpar, I could try out T-Mobile. I believe under their unlock webpage, I would be eligible in 60 days:

"Postpaid Phones and Tablets with no Service Commitment: Account has been active for at least sixty days and is in good standing (i.e., it has no past due amount or unpaid balance owed AT&T)." https://forums.windowscentral.com/e...viceunlock%2Fclient%2Fen_US%2F&token=DIMDdaQJ

No on the unlock. AT&T won't unlock it since you're not a customer in good-standing blah blah blah. So that's definitely a no.

I'm using the AT&T 635 on Cricket right now. Works just fine out of the box. I haven't had to configure anything.

Locked AT&T phones work fine on Cricket without any issues. Locked Cricket phones do NOT work on AT&T.

You're a go.

Thanks for the response. I know it totally varies on your location and other factors, but how is the Cricket network working for you, in particular data speeds on the 635?

I came from AT&T postpaid. Enjoying the savings. I don't do gaming or anything that would be affected by Cricket's higher pings. As you know, speeds are capped at 4mbps on HSPA and 8mbps on LTE. On that front I don't have any trouble doing the things I do--watching the occasional youtube video, surfing the web, reading news, etc.

I did a speed test with my 635 last night (it's not my daily driver. That distinction goes to the HTC One M7). My ping was about 240, 7.5 down 5.9 up. Solid and not in need of anything more. It's worth noting that others have reported lower ping times in less congested areas. I'm in southern New Jersey (the Philadelphia 'burbs) so my pings are a little higher than what I see other people get. But, like I said, I don't see any real difference except in the wallet.

I figured as much and that's the appeal - the backing of a national carrier (AT&T) with solid speeds and a great rate. I have Virgin Mobile now and I expect Cricket to be an upgrade in terms of coverage and speed, while monthly it will be about the same.

Looks like I'm getting the AT&T 635 from the MS store with the extra shell bundle. Probably put the phone order in this week, but I won't switch to Cricket until my VM month is over at the end of the month. Thanks again.

Remember to port your number before canceling or running out of VM service. A number needs to be ported from an active account.

Getting some family to switch to cricket too. Well worth it!

If you'd like a referral, let me know. If you'd like to, we would both get 25 dollar credits after 60 days of service. Definitely worth it! PM me if you're interested.

I'm getting a 630 with Cricket in three days.
