SMS problems did not go away with Amber Update

It looks like most non-Verizon 822 users can now send SMS with the Amber update. I thought I could also send it on 3G, but that was only when the phone was switching signals between Edge, 3G and HSPA. I have tried setting the cellular status automatically and have tried editing the APN many times, yet all have failed to let me send texts in anything other than 2G Edge. Can anyone, especially one who is using the 822 on T-Mobile, explain how to get the 822 sending SMS on 3G? It would mean a lot to not have to switch signals every time I wanted to send a text.
