So I'm looking at getting a 900 from AT&T outright. My wife is travelling down to the states in a few weeks so she'll be picking it up.

I understand that there is no way to change the MMS settings for another carrier. I've been following this thread on the Nokia forums, and this post was just made stating:

Thank you for emailing the Nokia Canada Careline.

In response to your e-mail, we would like to verify if you are using Rogers network. If you are not using Rogers, we are sorry to inform you that we are unable to guarantee Internet tethering to work with other service providers since you need to have the correct SIM card settings.

In line with this, we are sorry to inform you that in markets where the Lumia phones are sold only as carrier specific versions, the network set-up application is not available because the phone already comes pre-configured with the correct settings for your network.

However, you may manually add your network service provider's access point into your Nokia Lumia 900. Please note that when you ?Add APN?, we would like to inform you that MMS service will not work unless you reset your Nokia Lumia 900 before you ?Add APN?.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again. To ensure proper handling of your case, kindly continue using the current subject line.

You may check out all the phones and accessories at Cell Phones and Smartphones - Nokia - Canada. For further inquiries, please call us at 1-888-226-6542 and we will definitely be of assistance in finding the product for you.

Thank you for your e-mail.

Kind regards,

Can someone please explain what the highlighted text means in layman's terms?

Also, if I buy it from AT&T and get them to unlock it, will I still be dependent on them for Updates?

Thanks!

1. That means that if you want your MMS to work on Rogers, you would need to set up APN manually. It can be done in Settings>Cellular. You would also have to reset your phone before setting APN.

2. Currently, AT&T is being very uptight about giving up unlock codes. The reason is their exclusivity period, which some may ran out a day ago, but so far there has been no news of mass release of unlock codes. Unlocking websites CANNOT unlock AT&T's Lumia at the moment. Some people have reported getting unlock codes from AT&T, but those are very rare situations and not guaranteed. It can be done, but you would have to spend a good time on the phone with them and not once, but many times. And even if you do get the unlock somehow, YES you would be dependent on them for updates as its their phone.
