Is there a way to do a soft reset/battery pull type reset action? I found online some things that say to hold the down volume and power buttons until the phone vibrates 3 times but that doesn't work.

Is just holding down the power button until it vibrates once and reboots the soft reset?

Hold down the power down 10 seconds. That should do the trick.
