I know for a fact that an update for the 920 is currently in testing. It is newer than current 920 firmware revision by 4 weeks, at least, newer than the firmware revision on my 920. Let's hope AT&T releases it soon...

Is it going to fix the battery drain issue?

Is it going to implement a notification center?

So far, it looks like notification center will not be happening with Portico. I would be very surprised if they were able to include that such a short time after release.

To be honest, I wish they would just work on a full Skype instead of the preview.

nokia/windows doesn't seem to explain what the new updates are for. it'll show up one day and not tell you what's being changed/updated/fixed.

well technically Microsoft has the ability to just push out updates OTA, instead of going through carriers with W8

If Microsoft had the capability of doing that and if they did that, then Microsoft would shoot themselves in the foot. An OS update may include OEM and/or carrier firmware updates as well.
