[INFO]As I've been in crisis plagued Syria for 2 months now , I wasn't able to follow on your requests and questions and for that I'm sorry
I still won't be able to do so as I still haven't left my home country just yet. a huge thanks to everyone who answered questions posted by others here. take care everyone. (and enjoy the new Nokia care suit 2013)[/INFO]

[WARN]*This process will VOID your warranty so try on your own risk.
*This process will WIPE ALL YOUR DATA including apps/music/photos/videos. (Even if you have a Microsoft account with Back up on)
*If you're using Microsoft Account with Backup options enabled , Your contacts, calendar events and so on will be restored. even purchased apps could be reinstalled
BUT if for some reason you don't use your Microsoft account with your Lumia 920 all your contacts/calendar events and any other personal information will be wiped for ever.
*Charge your phone fully , don't worry you wont be needing your phone for almost 90% of the update process.[/WARN]
[TIP] how to get your product code, Install Nokia Care Suit 5.0 (link shared bellow) , launch Product Support Tool for Store , connect your phone (Open Connection Management) , choose the USB cable that has the phone on it . Once the phone gets discovered . on the right panel Phone Information > Basic info > Product code.
If for some reason you didn't understand a word I wrote here's a photographic tutorial.[/TIP]

Why can't I get portico update yet?.Well US/Canada got the portico update early , probably to savor and increase sales during the holidays (and decrease returns for the same reason).
But the rest of us in the world who went ahead and bought the Lumia 920 unlocked we kind got screwed, not to worry though f you're not keen on OTA and you haven't spent much time using your phone. a Clean install of portico could be possible for your phone.
Flashing the Lumia 920 is the easiest of all previous Nokia phones , specially after Nokia Care Suit which replaced the old annoying Phoenix Software.

    How to update then?
a week ago I noticed that several global variant phones got the update on Navifirm (though didn't show up OTA) ,and yesterday I was lucky enough to witness the addition of my own product code amongst many, so I immediately wanted to update seeing how the random shutdowns drove me crazy. (Plus I wanted to see if they fixed the dying while on Wireless Charging bug.) (Spoiler they didn't but it can be avoided by turning WIFI off.)
Now before you start opening old Navifirm to get the update. Check if your product code is amongst this list which has Portico update available for them
as of 29/12/2012 this is the list of Variants that got Portico Update.

My Variant has got the Portico update, what now?
If you found your product code install Nokia Care Suit 5.0 "2013 edition
Thanks for Gregory devaux for skydriving this new Nokia care suit.
[TIP]It works on both Windows7/8, though in both cases be sure to install first
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package
    [/TIP]
Launch Product Support tool For Store 5.0 (Part of the Nokia Care Suit) or alternatively if you missed the link you can find it here
[CMD]"C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Nokia Care Suite\Product Support Tool For Store 5.0\ProductSupportToolForStore.exe"[/CMD]
[WARN]*DO NOT CONNECT YOUR PHONE YET[/WARN]
    [NOTE]If you are a visual guy , here's a visually supported tutorial [/NOTE]
When the App finally launches Click on File > Open products > Navigate to Lumia 920 (RM821)
    * Alternatively you can filter the result by typing RM821 and the Global Variant product will show up.
Click on Open , and you're going to see the Lumia 920 to your left.
Navigate to Programming (it's down on the left panel, if you can't see it just maximize your screen window)
    Programming > Recovery.
    [HR][/HR]
In Recovery Click on "Find Online" button , and you'll be able to search for your Product code , once you find your Variant (which usually includes the color of the phone so be sure it matches or else its not your product code. Which is fine but is NOT RECOMMENDED)
Once you selected your variant click on download and wait till the 1.22gb download finishes.
Once it's installed you should click on Start (Bottom right)
    [HR][/HR]
Now a Progress box Called USB RECOVERY will check your update data (don't worry it won't download it again)
and then it'll show you that it lost the connection with your device ,This is when you plug in your phone Press and hold on Vol down and power button till you get a vibration and click on Retry (don't worry if the window closes without you pressing Retry._
If the Nokia Logo moved to the top , the flashing process has started and from here on then , there's nothing for you to do but wait .
Once its done it'll reboot and if your variant was correct the app will say it got recovered . (or it'll show you an error that you can ignore.)
When your phone finally gets launched , you'll be on Portico ... and you'll do pretty much all the things you did when you first got the phone.
    [HR][/HR]
Thanks for reading expect a video showing you how to use the flashing app soon.

So I checked , if you installed Nokia Care Suit 5.0 , launched Product Support Tool for Store , connected your phone (Open Connection Management) , choose the USB cable that has the phone on it .
Once the phone gets discovered . Phone Information > Basic info > Product code.

I'm assuming that this doesn't have the developer device firmware for the portico update, correct? I have the device from the build conference, but can't find a way to update it. Thanks!

really nice ...easy ..clear ,and well made post.
did anyone try to recover to another firm that doesn't match their code?
if yes it may help de-brand some phones...rogers unlocked ones for ex.

I hope someone dare to do so (I certainly wouldn't do as such on my phone) , But its key that At&t and Rogers are basically different phones from Global and the chances are they won't accept another firmware.

There's actually more AU firmwares listed under 1232.5951.1249.1002. These are the unbranded firmwares.

Anyway, I flashed mine using your tutorial and everything went well. I had trouble installing Nokia Care Suite but finally got it working somehow and everything else was a breeze. WP8's backup system works quite well too.

No worries. I think it's too early to tell about battery life as I flashed it not long ago. I'll report back after I get some good usage out of it.

What doesn't work , I've read in many forums that the problem you describe was caused by miss installed drivers. mainly Fuse.
Did you try and install all the drivers listed there ?.
