Nokia's now a full year into its Windows Phone transition and it appears that Lumia sales have returned to health. After a challenging Q3, the company has just announced its Q4 2012 financial results today, revealing that 4.4 million Lumia devices were sold in its recent quarter. Nokia previously shipped 2.9 million Lumia devices in its previous quarter, making this a return to the kind of sales we witnessed in Q2 (4 million). Up to December 31st, Nokia has shipped 14.3 million Lumias.

Nokia estimated it would sell 4.4 million Lumias in Q4 thanks to some recent guidance, so today's confirmation is hardly surprising. However, Nokia revealed that its North American devices and services volumes were up 40 percent from the same quarter a year ago to 700,000 in total. That's a solid bump from the previous quarter of 300,000 and greater than Nokia's Q2 of 600,000.

Nokia's rolling thunder approach to the US market is still going slowly, but there's signs that its recent product launches are starting to increase sales in that particular market. Nokia is expected to unveil new Windows Phone devices at Mobile World Congress next month too that, if released soon enough, may help it boost Lumia sales for Q1 2013

On the other hand, Nokia is going to suspend paying a dividend for the first time in 20 years, which is not a sign of great health. Most analysts remain on the fence about the long term health of the company.

700k with all that marketing... that's actually a scary number.

YoY .. all red. I am surprised NSN did as well as it did... it has been in the negative for the longest time..

9.3 Million Asha "Smartphones" (very vague definition here... I still don't think they can call them that)
4.4 Million Lumia Smartphones (considering that we are talking about Q4 .. this is not good)
2.2 Million Symbian Smartphones (this is crazy.. the platform has been announced dead for over a year now.. how is that possible at an average selling price of ~$200 is beyond me)

I think in Nokia's case, looking at YoY isn't very helpful as the competitive landscape and their portfolio of devices has changed drastically. Viewing it quarter to quarter (Q3 to Q4, etc) probably show a clearer trend of its development.

When you consider that the 920 really did not get out there in numbers until mid quarter or even later, to me that is a good sign that a lot of the sales could have come later in the quarter. I am a little concerned that they project 1st quarter sales to not be as strong when they are selling in more countries. I am hoping they are just being conservative.
