I wanted to try Windows Phone so I got a prepaid 635 from AT&T. I really like the phone and the OS and I would like to get a better phone but stick with a no contract phone. If I get an unlocked higher end Nokia/Windows Phone, as long as SIM card is the same type, can I swap from the 635?

With an unlocked phone, where do the OS updates come from? MS or the provider of service?

Thanks

Yes.

You can even cut down the SIM to nano-SIM size if you need to, although YMMV.

OS updates for unlocked, unbranded phones comes direct from MS.

Been using unlocked, unbranded phones for a few years now and switching sim cards works fine. I currently have a 930 and a backup 635. Nano sim and micro sim. I just use a sim adaptor. It's a bit nerve wracking the first time using the sim cutter though. :/ It's nice not depending on a carrier for updates.
Edit: Be aware there is a difference between unlocked and unbranded. For ex: An "unlocked" AT&T phone, even if used on another carrier, will still get updates thru AT&T. "Unbranded" are usually international models. You may not get stuff like LTE. Have to check which bands are supported.
