I use MPATool. What I am wondering though is whether there's a way to add artist background without using MPATool so that, say, for example, I can copy over the songs to another WP device and not need to run MPATool because the artist backgrounds have been embedded directly to the songs.

It won't take you to another screen. When you tap it, don't leave the app. If the phone locks, just leave it alone for a few minutes. 2.5GB is a lot for it to get rid of.
