Outlook 2003 finds gmail incoming server but ..........

Outlook 2003 finds gmail incoming server (it is tricked green on testing) but then I get a message that says "Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Outlook could not connect to the incoming PO3 mail server because the server did not accept your user name or password".

Any idea what''s going on or how to bypass the problem? both my user name and password are correct.
