640 XL is about 5.5 - 5.7 inch screen. Slightly smaller than the 1520 from what I'm told.

I wonder if this will mean that MS plans to release larger screened (i.e. phablet-sized) phones throughout the price range:
540/XL
640/XL
740/XL
840/XL
940/XL
That'd be ten phones if they did. Whoa.

Personally, I think this would be a mistake. I'd like to see them offer fewer devices. I've drawn comparison to Samsung because they are attempting to create some more clearly defined "lines" for their handsets also:

540/XL = the absolute baseline specs @ $249/$299 --similar to the Samsung "E" models (but 2 instead of 3)
740/XL = midrange @ $399/$449 -- similar to the Samsung Alpha models (but 2 instead of 3)
940/XL = flagship @ $599/$649 -- straight up flagship and flagship phablet.

Then they can offer any "one-off" devices (I'm looking at you 1020 successor) with a 1XXX number.
If they want to offer any lower-end phones, then they should bear the "Asha" name, not Lumia.

I completely agree with you 5 devices max. Entry lvl = 5XX Mid lvl =7XX high lvl 9XX. Then you can a phablet. ( Lumia XL) Lastly a specialty phone (Lumia "S" i.e. 1020). With room for country specific variants of course

Guys...

GSM Arena has posted spec as follows:

640
640XL
640 LTE
640XL LTE
And Dual SIM Variants.

look at the 640XL LTE Dual SIM radios
Capture.JPG

If the above is true... There is finally a Windows Phone variant that can be sold unlocked anywhere in the world. This may be a step towards unification of regions and pushing OTAs to every unit with the same model number.

I'm not sure that spec is true, but if it is that excites the heck out of me.

About time, I think if MS wants its Lumia to succeed, they'd better sell unlocked phone so people can get update OTAs (hopefully) directly from MS

IMO

Nope!
1. I don't think a 740 will appear that soon.

2. I don't think we're going to see another XL since we already have the 1520-line taking the high end, and the 640 XL taking the lower-midrange (replacing the 1320)

1. Agreed

2. I Believe we will see another XL very soon. It will be the 940XL. Which will replace the 15xx series

1. haha, I just think MS would announce new phone(s) every two months (nov'14: 535, jan'15: 435 & 532, mar'15:640 & 640XL)

2. I'm not sure for this and what name it would be, 740XL, 940XL or 840XL, but I believe they still want to release 1520 successor, maybe for Windows 10.
