I love hypothetical discussions, so here's my challenge to you:

You're Microsoft and you want to design and release first party devices for the Windows 10 launch. However, because of concerns about angering PC and fledgling Windows Phone OEMs, as well as not wanting a Surface RT situation, you decide to limit the total number of devices at launch to 5. What do you design and release to show the full range of Windows 10's capabilities?

Here's my list...

Surface Pro 4- Surface Pro 3 with new Intel chips and Windows 10. It shows off Continuum and the tablet that can replace your laptop.

LumiaTab 9- 9 or so inch dedicated tablet running Windows 10 mobile, with either a high end Qualcomm or Atom chip. Shows off Windows 10 Nearly shameless iPad clone, but with a display port and the ability to use Surface accessories, namely the pen. Priced about 299-349.

Lumia 1540- Lumia 1520 with up gunned specs and a Galaxy note style stylus.

Lumia 940- Lumia Icon successor, same as the 1540, but with no pen.

Lumia 540- Lumia 535 with Windows 10.

The list is good... except for the 9 inch tablet, i think the OEM's are doing a good job to bring small format W8.1 tablets to the market.

If MS decides to compete with small W10 tablets, that would alienate and make bad blood among OEM's... so i believe it would be safer to stick with the Surface line. Maybe that was the reason that force MS to cancel the Surface Mini.

Lumia 940 should be like Samsung's Note Mini edition.

I think this is how we gonna work :-
all phone allowed to use stylus (from 540 to 1540), doesn't care about spec, all Microsoft need to do is to add stylus definition on the touchscreen.
And stylus has...
  1. Selfie pen - instant selfie pen, same as surface pen with modify of side button
    • top one for instant selfie capture. Hold for open camera app and automatic switch to FFC, when app is open, it will capture image, used for people who want has no one to help when capturing best selfie image on the table.
    • bottom one for instant rear camera picture. same as top one, open app, automatic witch to rear, when app is open it will capture image, used for people who want to capture a family/friends photo during party/meeting etc.
  2. Working pen - Same as surface pen, no modify
  3. Shortcut pen - Same as Samsung's note pen, hold on screen will open shortcuts
  4. Modifiable pen - Same as surface pen, with extra 2 buttons, modifiable through Microsoft Stylus Hub for Windows Phone, able to modify what will system do when pressed button

plus all Lumia phone...

for Lumia 1040, use dual CPU because of 8K recording, Snapdragon 805 used for normal usage, Snapdragon 800 for image processing when recording
*if camera is more than 30MP, it will use dual CPU like 1040

EDIT: hope this wasn't that unclear and too long to read

I love the pen idea. It'd be like a Bluetooth remote for the phone. I don't think pen detection would be possible to work into the sub hundred dollar phones, just for reason of the parts involved.

hmm, you are right, then pen would have bluetooth and detection for screen on it. So it is easy for people to upgrade their phone without buy a new pen.

for pens advertisement, it should have lots of people holding different phone that screen would detect pen touch, and people are sharing their pen.
