Can Apple or Google copy live tiles?

I'm wondering, can Apple or Google copy live tiles? Or has Microsoft patented in such a way that they would have to pay a lot?

They can copy of they want to one way or the another. Perhaps it won't be same in terms of aesthetics but functionality would be same.

I guess Apple and Google are watching.
They won't copy until Microsoft has proved Windows Phone is a success.
especially true for Apple. They won't release a "new" product before the concepts are proved to be working.

Apple isn't scared of imitating Windows Phone. Look at ios 7's design revamp. Question is, do they have the balls to shout out that they are copying such an iconic feature...

I'm just waiting for it to happen. Because it is the only logical evolution of app icons. Live tiles are so good.
