Unless you're visiting sites that have lots of malware and highly suspicious content then Windows Defender is perfectly fine.

The biggest misunderstanding when it comes to viruses is that avoidance is the easiest way to deal with the issue.

I only use defender as it's light weight and doesn't bother me.

I only use Windows Defender. Never had an issue.

I think this a combination of MS getting much better at security, and me not downloading from torrents and what not.
