a 1000$ sound card, and a 300$ microphone! its the bare minimum!

most of devices from known vendors are fine... My guess is, that you need a desktop microphone, not a headset, since you mentioned cortana...
anything for 15$+ should work more than just OK.

I'd like to see Microsoft offer some freestanding microphone and/or microphone-speaker combos (similar to Amazons' Alexa) and use them as another way to drive awareness and use of Cortana. Adding WiFi could even bring Cortana to rooms where you don't have a computer. In this scenario I see Cortana used to control music, give weather updates, send and receive messages or calls, etc. This would be the next stage of responsive design- no screen. Amazon has already shown some cool tricks. Microsoft should step it up a notch.
