Hey guys an gals,

For whatever reason my machine is not able to successfully upgrade to any of the new windows 10 builds. I can see them in windows updates no problem and download them no problem, but when it goes too install and reboots, it will start the update process and then reboot out of no where and restore my previous build. This has happened with the release of builds 10158,10159 and the latest 10162.

I even tried making my own iso file from the .esd files downloaded through windows updates but they wont work either. At one point i was getting an error of 0x8007002c - 0x2000D, The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation (but this would only show up if i went to upgrade using an ISO, not through windows updates). When it errors out and restores the previous build of 10130 when initiated through windows update i dont get any error message at all.

Id rather NOT do a fresh install since the official release of Windows 10 is right around the corner. I tried doing an SFC /SCANNOW and it says it finds errors but cannot repair them. I even tried doing a dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth but it gets stuck at 20% then fails.

Help???

Edit: I should also mention that ive been running the windows 10 preview since almost the beginning and i was able to do in place upgrades of each new build with no issues up until now.

There was an upgrade bug with Build 10130 if I remember correctly. I assume you have a way to restore back to Windows 8.1? Then you could jump to Build 10162. It's a technical preview which is pretty much synonymous with "endlessly frustrating."

Actually i did a fresh install from nothing, no upgrade was done at all so i cant revert back to anything.

Edit: The reason being is i built my own computer and had Windows 7 on it. I felt like doing a fresh install of Windows 10 instead of an upgrade from 7.

Edit 2: I tried doing a recovery to an earlier build but when i click Get Started nothing happens.

Restarted a few times and finally after i clicked Get Started to go back to a previous build it came up saying it couldn't cause no previous builds were found........... makes no bloody sense.

You shouldn't have gotten onto the Insider Preview without a full backup of a licensed operating system in case something went wrong.
I'm afraid without a backup or way to restore to a licensed operating system I can't help you. There's a chance that when the full upgrade of Windows 10 comes out you'll be able to upgrade.
You can try switching to Slow Ring and use the ISO files to do a fresh install of Build 10162, which may work. Other than that I don't have any ideas. I'm sorry, wish I could do more.

I just ended up doing a fresh install of 10162. I downloaded the ISO from the Insider Preview website (like ive done before). Burnt it too a dvd, formatted my SSD and installed fresh.
