Can someone please confirm, that Xeon W3550 and alike (Bloomfield), in this context inside HP Z400, will work with 64-bit Windows 10 (and 8.1)?
I guess it should, but I just would like to be sure before spending some money on second hand device. There was at least one thread about some core2 having trouble with some missing processor feature. Meanwhile I'm running 64-bit insider W10 on Core2 T4300 and waiting update for Athlon X4 :)

I can't guarantee that the Xeon W3550 /Z400 will work with Windows 10, but I'm 99.9% sure you'll have no issues with Windows 8.1.

Having said that, I have the older system, the XW6600 workstation, with x2 E5420 Quad core cpu's, 32Gb installed server memory, R7 240D 2Gb graphic card, running Windows 10 through insider program, with out any issues whatsoever.

If it works with 8.1 it works with 10.

That's excellent news. It'll give the Xeon W3550 /Z400 a new least of life. I couldn't commit to saying myself it would work with windows 10. To be frank I wasn't sure.

Thanks for the info!
i3-2100 would be another alternative with less multithreading and electrical power but faster in single thread ;) Let's see, if I can get Xeon for cheap and give it a try.

I'm running W10 Pro 64 bit on a dual w5590 and a Quatro 410 GPU and it's running flawlessly. Granted the Quatro GPU doesn't have a driver I can use yet but seeing as this is primary a development computer and not my main compiling machine it doesn't seem to affect anything to a noticeable extent
