Last night I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10, went really smooth, and today I replaced the 500GB HD with a 500GB SSD and did a clean install. During the install it asked for my CD key and I typed in the Windows 7 CD key as people said the Windows 10 once upgraded would be tied to, and it said it couldn't activate. However, once Windows 10 was fully installed I went to the System window to go Activate Windows and it says it's already activated. Does it sound like it really is Activate or is there another way for me to be sure?

It's really activated. The reason you couldn't activate it with your Windows 7 key is because only a Windows 10 key can activate Windows 10.

Sounds good, thank you.

That does lead me to ask then how when I do a clean install now it will know to activate properly when I wasn't given a Win 10 key.

Because a Windows 10 key was automatically generated for you. If you right click on This PC in File Explorer and click properties, you'll be able to see that your key has changed.
