Last night I noticed that my Surface 3 was running pretty slow. Nothing was really smooth and sometimes it seemed unresponsive. I opened the task manager and discovered that my CPU was running at 100%. After further investigation, I discovered a task called System was running and constantly using 50-65% of my CPU. After looking at the properties for the task, the file in question is "ntoskrnl.exe", a critical Windows system file. After researching this a bit online, I have since tried to update all my drivers, checked for and removed malware (there was one thing) and made sure I had all system updates installed, and have restarted multiple times. None of this has helped. As soon as the system boots up, this task is using up half of the CPU and my CPU usage is pegged constantly from 90-100%.
