Since Windows 8 I've been using the built in Windows Defender. While it may not be the absolute best, it is good enough. It's there, it's free, and it's quiet. I hate antivirus programs that keep on popping open windows asking for updates. Defender is a program that you don't notice is there until it lets you know that something needs to be addressed.
There may be other programs that could objectively be called better than Defender, but I've had good success using Microsoft's built in solution. The "better" options are generally not free, unless you use the free version that will have limitations.
