What is Windows Mobile Device Center?

Usually when I plugin my pone it launches the Windows phone companion app, but today it installed and loaded something called "Windows Mobile Device Center". Am I missing something? Has this always been there or is it something new? What does it do? Does it sync better? Can I have apony for xmas?

does it launch it automatically? because you can change that.
go to settings -> Devices -> autoplay and you can choose companion app again.

I remember there was a Windows Mobile Device Center for Windows Mobile years ago. but I don't know why you got it, or if it's the same. but you can always go back to companion if you want.

It's been a while since I saw that software. If I'm not mistaken, the Windows Mobile Device Center is designed for Windows Mobile 6 devices, the one that came before Windows Phone 7. With it came the old ActiveSync, which allowed users to synchronize their Windows Mobile devices to, e.g., Outlook.

So, I'd say that that is something "old", although I'm not sure why it's showing up now in your Windows 10. It doesn't show up in my PC - won't even turn up when I search my PC for it.

By chance, can you upload a screenshot of what you're seeing?

Ii had to rollback to 8.1 after several crashes so I can't provide a screenshot, sorry.
