How can I add shortcuts to Windows 10 quick access in file explorer?

When I try to drag shotcuts to it, it shows a no symbol (red circle with a dash through it) no matter which item I try to add to it. I had no problem adding anything in it every time I upgraded or reinstalled Windows 10 but after the last reinstall I'm having this problem. I suspect that this could get resolved by some registry hack. Please reply only if you have a confirmed solution to this. Thanks

When you right click on "quick access", the first option is to "add current folder to Quick access". I have followed this step and confirmed it works as advertised.
