I have two PC's running Windows 10. My laptop updated fine to the new build. My desktop saw the new build. Then a error occurred when "preparing to install" now the PC doesn't see the update

I had the same error on my desktop (x64) and on my tablet (x86) (both of which are running 10240 as installed in July). The update showed up on both this morning shortly after the article was posted, and after that "error" neither can see the 10586 update.

Gabe addressed that in a tweet earlier today, and stated you can perform the upgrade by downloading the ISO, clicking the ISO, and running the setup file contained inside. It will perform the upgrade that way.
Download Windwos 10

Do i need To reactivate? And do I lose my files? I can't afford that

If you choose to upgrade instead of clean install during the setup, then no, you should not lose your files and should not need to reactivate.

However, it's always recommended to backup your files before making any changes to your computer like this.

I think I had the same issue. It failed saying "error 0x8024200D: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586." It no longer shows in Windows Update. Even DISM didn't fix it. Grabbing the Media Creation Tool now and going for the upgrade. Of course this worked on my HTPC but not my main workstation...

Edit: one hour later, I'm all updated to 10586.

I solved the problem by navigating to the SoftwareDistribution/Downloads folder and removing everything in it. I checked for updates again and it redownloaded & installed the necessary files afterwards.

What if that doesn't work either? I haven't even seen the update in WU and the Creation tool or an ISO burned to disk fail every time.
