I just upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10. No Pictures. Where did my pictures go?

I just upgraded my windows 7 laptop to windows 10. No Pictures.

I upgraded and now I don't have any pictures or any other user files. I did not do an actual backup, because the message said that all my files would be safe. As I started this upgrade, I saw that a backup was done. Where did my pictures go? Did I lose them? Are they somewhere I don know of? What do I need to do? Help!

The same thing has happened to me. I did a backup but since the upgrade my external hard drive isn't recognised any more!
