Seemingly stuck in tablet mode

Not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, but it seems like software. My laptop does not appear to recognize when the position is in desktop mode. I no longer receive the popups asking if i want to enter tablet mode or desktop mode. Consequently I need to force tablet mode on or off by using the Action Center. Another consequence is that I cannot use my trackpad gestures. I've went to the tablet mode settings and the automatic switch option is set to "Always ask before switching".
