I updated my phone to Windows 10, but I appear to have lost all my text messages. I am very surprised at this, as I would have thought that the update would have been smart enough to conserve this. Is there a way to recover my messages, or will reverting back to Windows 8 allow me to retrieve them?

Unless you had text backup/syncing on in the settings, they are gone.
If you did have that enabled then there is a good chance they will re-appear after a little while. It is known they sometimes delay before appearing. Let all the app upgrades install and they fill in in the background.
