So, there are lots of tutorials and software out there on how to make movies for portable devices. But I just noticed today, that the free software from Microsoft, Windows Live Movie Maker, will nicely re-encode and re-size things ideally for the phones!

Easiest way to do it:

1. Download VidCoder, install, and launch.
2. Drag-and-drop video file.
3. Select output directory.
4. Choose 'Android High' preset.
5. Press 'Encode', transfer resulting file using Zune.

Easy!

How is that easier then using an already installed Microsoft product many (if not most) people have?

Same instructions as yours except you choose WP7 preset.

Maybe there was just no security features on the DVD, but last night I just put a DVD in, dragged the VOB file from the disc to Windows Live Movie Maker, clicked WP7 output, and viola it was done.
