[NOTE]NOTE : If you have a lot of games saved then you might be reluctant to follow this procedure.[/NOTE]

I did the following set of steps to upgrade my Nokia Lumia 1320 from WP8 to WP8.1 Dev Preview. Its been 2 days now and haven't faced any issues as such.

(STEP 1) Do a hard reset and get the phone back to factory settings i.e with GDR3 (Nokia Black) with your latest firmware.
[INFO]1) Turn off your phone.
2) Turn on your phone again by pressing the volume down button until you see the exclamation mark !
3) Then, reset the phone by pressing the following four buttons in this order: Volume up, Volume down, Power, Volume down.
4) Your phone should now reset and restart itself. (It might take a while for the process to complete.)[/INFO]

(STEP 2) Register on app studio, download the Preview for developer app and install it. It can be found here :
Preview for Developers | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (United States)

(STEP 3) Check phone for updates by going to App List --> Settings --> Phone Update --> Check for update and install WP8.1 Dev Preview

(STEP 4) Once the install has completed, do a hard reset following the method mentioned in (STEP 1).

(STEP 5) Then install your apps one by one onto the phone or SD card. To install them onto the SD card go to App List --> Data Sense and select SD card option for apps.

(STEP 7) Once you have finished installing all the app, then do a soft rest. (Press Volume Down button + power button for few seconds till phone reboots)

And then your good to go. This is the cleanest method for a upgrade in my honest opinion. Keeping my fingers crossed that in the days to come nothing goes wrong and everything continues to run smooth.

Great! this is what I did on my L920.

What if "formatting SD" can be a step? I guess it can help.
I understand what you are saying. Actually I bought a new SD card so it completely slipped off my mind. :)

I upgraded just like normal and then done a hard reset, is the end result not the same or could you tell me what I'm missing
I guess its more or less the same. If you want to get past the migration steps quickly the method i suggested would be cool.

The best thing to do after a hard reboot is opting out of restoring backup data. You'll truly have a clean install. Doing this removed 99% of the lag on my 520.

I did a clean install after random reboots. There's a section in the store with a list of previous apps I'd installed. I selected only the ones I need and the phone has been great . . . other than the battery drain, which I'm sure will level off.

Great tips, worked great.
Just one question, do i need to install the "Preview for developers" again once i have done the hard reset or its not needed once i have upgraded?
Not sure if i get the future updates without having it installed ? Dont want to install unnecessary stuff if its not needed...

If you don't restore from a backup, can you restore text messages separately?
I can't recall, is the restore process granular?

UPDATE: i just restored and set it up as a new phone and my text messages returned within the next couple hours :)
its like they never left

How about your apps, how they were organized and app data (settings, game progress and such)?
This is the thing i hate about android and hope WP handled. iOS have had this since day 1 so i hope Microsoft has this covered.
