I recently purchased a Lumia 1520, which is not natively available in my market (Canada). It's factory unlocked and it came loaded with WP 8.1 and cyan, but now I'm wondering what will happen when new software gets pushed for the device. If the carriers push the updates for the devices they sell, them how am I ever going to get the latest software?

Will it come directly from Microsoft?

Where is the phone from? Was it ever carrier locked or is it a country variant?

If it's a country variant you'll get updates once that variant's updates released.

If it was carrier locked it will rely solely on the carrier releasing the update.

You can check if the phone was a carrier device by doing into Settings -> About

Also to note, if it's a carrier variant, the updates are released, not pushed, by the carrier. So if you've got a device that was made for a carrier that's not in your country, it will get its update when the carrier it originated from releases the update, even if that device never sees a single second on that carriers service.
