    Hey guys,

One thing that really bugs me about wp7 (I have a Lumia 900) is that the default maps app does not do spoken turn by turn and you have to tap the screen each time to hear the directions.

Was this improved at all in wp8? Do you still have to tap the screen to have the directions read or does it do it automatically like you would expect?

    Let me know. Thanks guys.

I haven't tried directions from Maps yet, but I doubt it. The Nokia Drive app is what they want you to use for turn-by-turn and that does speak to you, including street names.

On a Nokia phone, the default Maps is hidden. The only way to get to it is through Local Scout or Bing.

They clearly want you using Nokia Maps as the default. So anyway, if you get directions in Nokia Maps, there's a summary of the route, and then you tap "Start Navigation" to bring it to Nokia Drive and automatically start routing.
