I remember there was talk of WP8 increasing live tile limit. What is the current WP8 limit? Is it possible to go in to the phone settings and turn off live tiles for an app, or see all the apps that are currently using live tiles?

it is only possible to turn off live tiles from inside the app that has it....no phone option will allow u to see all apps that are using "live tiles"...but background tasks will be the most convenient since it lists all apps that uses background processes....that's what live tiles do....process in the background.....>settings>applications>background tasks

not necessarily. Live tiles should be using push notifications, not background tasks. For example, Facebook's background task is only related to periodic updates to the lockscreen images if you have the facebook lockscreen selected. Live tile updates and notifications come via push.
