Quick Question about Texts and IM's on WP8

There's just 1 thing that confuses me about WP8 at the moment. Let's say I've been online and talking to one of my contacts through messenger. That conversation is synced up and it's there on my phone. That's fine. Now let's say I want to text that same contact so I go to my messages and I type my message and the phone tries to send my message via IM even though I'm offline and my data is off. I can't for the life of me figure out a way to get the phone to send a text to the contact if the thread with the contact is already established via IM's online. Is there a button or a setting I'm missing? The only way I've been able to do it so far is by deleting the online thread entirely and then the phone will let me send a text. Is this my only solution or am I missing something because this isn't exactly ideal.

click the arrows at the bottom of the IM/TXT msg on the phone...it switches from text to IM
