Battery Drain due to webpage open

I noticed my battery draining last night and this morning really quick. I was logged into my Ip camera through the Browser . I thought hitting the back button would have closed the website and stopped it running. This wasn't the case Worked out I need to go to Tabs and then close the tab. problem fixed.

Interesting. I just tried this with an online stopwatch web page. Backing out of IE and then going back to the browser again a while later did not pause the running stopwatch, so I guess you're right in assuming that the script is still running.

I guess the solution here to ensure that web pages aren't running is to go to the 'tabs' screen and close the tabs.

Strange when you think the back button closes apps down you would assume it would close the website you are on.

Any webpage that runs scripts to refresh itself is going to drain the battery. This goes right back to something I just posted regarding battery drain. I came up doing desktop support yada, yada. 90% of all calls / tickets / etc had a root cause of user error. I would bet money its the same, if not higher with mobile devices. That includes battery drain.

This could be big for a lot of people that can't figure out where some random overnight battery drain comes from. A few nights ago I was fully charged and following a gamecast on espn.com. Backed out, went to bed with >95% and no apps running, woke up to <80%. Last night, I turned the phone off, then back on before bed was fully charged, and woke up to 97%.

I have noticed this behaviour as well. Sometimes when you quickly back out of a web page while it's loading you will notice that it's still trying to load when you come back later. The best thing to do is close all tabs before exiting.

Yes, with Android. But MS insists that WP8 apps are 'tombstoned' when you move away from them and so it shouldn't be an issue. That's why web pages in the process of downloading halt when you move away from the browser app and continue once you return.

This is a bug, and is even more of an issue because IE10 shouldn't have any background processes at all. Just check for yourself in settings. Not only can't you switch them off, IE isn't even listed in the section for background apps you can't disable.

Is MS aware and are they addressing this? My fear is that this is not an IE issue, but a tombstoning issue which could be much more widely spread and could affect many more apps.

I think the OP may have found the bug at the root of all the battery moans. This needs addressing fast.

Yep, like i said it could be more apps with this problem, not just IE.. At least on Android there are apps which can tell you what process/app is draining the battery or is stuck.. Here we shoot in the dark..

Only those that use background location or background media services. IE is a first party app, with direct access to parts of the OS that other apps do not have access to, so problems with IE don't necessarily translate to problems with all apps.

Yeah, I'd have to agree, it looks like OP has found a legit IE10 bug. I haven't experienced it, but reading through this thread, I'd have to say that I'd agree with the person who said something about scripts running in the background. I was under the impression that IE was suspended/tombstoned like other apps, but apparently at least the scripting continues to run. Interesting. Good find.

Another thought. While I don't listen to streaming music over the browser, I do know that HTML5 can do it, and that way back when Mango was released for WP7, they made it clear that you could stream HTML5 music over the browser, and not have to have the browser open..... I'm thinking that this problem ties in with that capability of the browser being able to continue running to stream music.

well when You launch for example a soundcloud track it taps in the music API (like internet radios or MyTube), I wouldn't think it is connected to this supposed "bug". However it's still a good find, I always kept a Facebook tab opened, let's see if closing it changes anything regarding stand-by time.

Managed to get 24hrs without needing to go into battery saver mode, airplane mode or disabling sync and such. If it wasn't for the amount of pictures I take I'd make it 1.5 days I'm sure
