How does Restore Function work?

Could someone please explain (or point me to an article about) how the restore function works? I've searched for this but I'm not getting the answers that I want Does it only work after a factory reset? Or can it correct a silly error? I meant to delete a thread but accidentally deleted a different thread - an important one. Is there any way to restore it or am I screwed? If I can restore it, how does it work? I have it backup texts checked but my Onedrive doesn't show a folder of saved texts.
Running 8.1 on a Lumia 920. Just downloaded 8.1 yesterday, is it possible that the texts weren't yet backed up?

Only way to find out :
go to SETTINGS >> BACKUP >> text messages, there's a dropdown for what you want restored (see if it comes back)

It says backup on for txt messages but they haven't come back! I deleted them yesterday. The tutorials talk about using Onedrive but am not seeing them there.

You have to restore them, they don't re-sync automatically ...
