this thing is wayyy too black. just look at it, during the video you can't even make out the actual form - its hidden in one giant shadow.

It's like a piece of A/V equipment. It's supposed to blend in the background.

I have a white TV cabinet, the inside was left unpainted, I painted in black and everything blends in.

what actually blend into the background was my white 360.

That's definitely not the norm. When I upgraded my HT setup I made sure that I had all black components short of my TB x41 headset. I moved all of my silver components to other rooms. It is nice that the only thing you can see are the LEDs when lit up.
