ok it looks like there is no way to transfer SMS.

does anyone know if you can connect to a Windows 10 computer and copy music files or photos/videos to the Android phone? I'm trying and it doesn't seem to want to copy over from Windows Explorer to the phone even though it sees the phone as storage.

also, is there a way to get widgets to auto update?

You can connect an Android phone to Windows 10 and it acts like a USB drive. Some OEMs may require their PC software but not usually. The drivers will download automatically.

You can try using this app for SMS transfer (I haven't used it) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smsbackup.leonardocezary.smsimporter&hl=en

There may be others.

You can also look into this - https://www.windowscentral.com/how-set-your-phone-windows-10

well I found a Samsung win 10 driver and that worked to connect the phone as normal usb storage

the contacts+message backup app doesn't work any longer so that sms importer can't work either without the file the backup app is supposed to produce.. oh well.
