Gotta go where the users are! With just two apps, this one and iOS's, Microsoft covered over 90% of smartphone users. Pretty brilliant I'd say!

I'm not really sure about this step from Ms. They need to make some exclusive features for their own platform.

I think with the Android and iOS version you can also edit older Office documents (.doc). In WP you can't. So worth the extra money because it has more features.

Apple & Google can get away with exclusive features, but Microsoft can't. Their market share is simply too small. Leaving Office on WP only would likely work against them. It would probably tend to drive customers away from Office more than drive customers to WP.

When I had my S3, I used Kingsoft Office (free), which is quite nice.
