App for GPS in Japan

Hello!
First time poster and all that.
I have only just got a Nokia Windows 8 phone, in the middle of transitioning from Android.
I am travelling to Japan in 8 weeks and was hoping to use the GPS feature in phone to help me get around.

Having read that the Nokia maps app doesn't cover Japan, I have been looking around a bit - wondering if anyone has some suggestions for a suitable app?
The Google Maps apps look like the best alternative at the moment, but is there are some offline alternatives available I would prefer them.

Also, I realised that I wouldn't have any mobile data features available while in Japan as I won't have a working sim card etc.
Does anyone know if I can just wing it with the GPS function of the phone only?

How about Navitime ?
Unfortunately the apps has been removed from Windows Phone store, after all Windows Phone 8 is never released by the carriers there. But the Windows RT apps is still available.

The car navigation and train switching apps is still available in Windows Phone though.

Never tried them, so I don't know if they will work without internet connection. Likely not, seeing the size of the apps.
