Laptop vs tablet

I recently snapped my On/off cable on my dell studio 1558. The laptop has been kinda under a lot of repairs and its heat sink and lanports are busted too.

I just surf the net, play music a lot (either though the headphones or through speakers) and work in Perl a lot. Working on a thesis in bioinformatics.

What would you suggest me? A tablet or a laptop?

I live in India. For reference in $s my ideal budget is around 800$ or so.

Laptop, since you're doing a lot of typing.

Either, since you can get a usb or Bluetooth keyboard to attach to your tablet...but for presentations and "real work", i genuinely like to use a laptop.

Ok, which laptop? I forgot to mention that my PC in the lab had the following specs, so I generally run my programs on this:
Cent is 6.5
16gb
I5-2400@3.10ghz and 32 such cores.
