Can you use any microUSB cable to charge?

I have a Lumia 1520 and my in-box charger is the two-piece type: one part is the microUSB cable and the other is the cylinder that you plug into the wall socket. I accidentally squashed the USB cable with the foot of my chair, but It still works fine despite looking slightly wrinkled. In case it fails, can I replace it with a generic, $3 microUSB cable?

I've got a couple of cheap ones from the UK equivalent of a 99cent store and they work just as well - despite being labelled as "suitable for Blackberrys and Samsungs".
