Churning wheels during update

[WPCentral Question]

After receiving a message to update my Lumia 920 yesterday (hoping it was 8.1 update much awaited) it looked like a small update. I started it and a short download followed and I agreed the go-ahead. The phone reset and 2 churning wheels and a progress bar appeared and nothing happened! It has been so for 15 hours and the progress bar is still not moving at all. I tried a soft reset manually (volume + on switch) but this only returned me to the same screen.
What can I do? Does anybody experience the same issue? Is it the amount of data?

Note: I am on a NL (Dutch) Country variant (not carrier specific; Lumia 920 purchased myself) which worked and updated OK the last 2 years.

My wifi signal is OK (a laptop working OK on internet via wifi). I tried a soft and a hard reset, both resulting in continuation of churning wheels and non-moving progress bar.

What else can I try?

I'm not sure whether this could be done from a laptop, but if so, you may wish to try it....Recovery software:
