The update has ruined my Nokia 820 Lumia

I went ahead with the update and ever since my phone has not worked properly, I cannot view messages, connect to the internet or Facebook even though I am connected to WiFi, my emails are not coming through properly and my twitter account won't work. Basically the phone is useless????

Your phone can be saved. You have two options.

One, you can hard reset your phone. It's obvious your install was corrupted so it needs to be fixed.

Two, you can use Nokia Software Recovery Tool. You'll need a PC, internet connection and your USB cable. This program will download a new firmware which is a bit big.

In both cases your personal data will be wiped from the phone so be sure to backup prior to doing either.

You could also try an interim step:

Power down you phone
Hold down the volume down and power together until you feel the second vibration
Release both volume and power buttons and let the phone reboot

If this doesn't do the trick, then do the step mentioned above to hard reset your phone to replace the update with a good installation of the update.
