Windows 8.1 vs 7

Normally I would say yes, but 10 is looming, well looming slowly so several months yet.

It depends on if you want to see 8.1, which some of like.

If you don't have any touch screen devices probably better staying with 7.

Wow, how long have you got? There are some obvious improvements to the OS that make it a no-brainer for me. W8.1 is more secure than 7 and more secure by default than 7, that's just a fact. 8.1 doesn't require any new hardware and will likely run faster on the same hardware because of the performance improvements and also because of the reduction in eye candy. Yes, the Start Screen takes a little getting used to but you can also boot straight to desktop if you prefer not to use it. The multi-monitor support is no longer a joke like it was in Windows 7. You get Hyper-V built-in for virtualisation; native support for mounting ISO images, VHDs and IMGs; the Task Manager has been massively overhauled and how about being able to see multiple copy operations in one window with the ability to independently pause and deal with conflicts at the end, rather than have them fail an entire operation? When you look at the myriad of improvements, it far outweighs the frenzy of backlash that launched from the removal of the Start Menu. I would say, give it a go, you can download a trial and run it in a virtual environment without harm to your current setup and you can see for yourself how you could benefit from the improvements now rather than waiting for Windows 10.
