Truncated contact name with active sync: how to fix?

After creating new MS Ex acc on device, and when syncing.. parts of the name field are missing from the device. To ensure the problem is not with active sync, I have performed the same sync with a BB q5. The q5 does not suffer the same issue.

It is important to note that names are not truncated to a fixed max length but something like John Doe would show as John.. It makes the device somewhat unusable as a phone/ contact list.

Any clues would help. I have 5 more days left to test.

The issue occurs both with Ex 2007 and Ex 2013. It only occurs with a Windows mobile and not with Blackberry device (also syncing with AS)
On further inspection what seems to happen is an automatic split of first name field with additional data being sent to other fields such as middle name and last name. Unfortunately this happening means that reading contacts is impossible as I have so many with the same surname.
