Closest thing you'll get currently. WP has it but there's no ability to use it currently.

MS did add the functionality to select WP's by adding Miracast (which works using WiFi direct). It just needs to open up for more phones and should be able to transfer user files.

Miracast is for audio and video. It's not what most people want out of WiFi Direct and I don't think Miracast will add file sharing.

WiFi Direct file sharing is what people want and I believe, though I could be wrong, WP has this capability, since WP8.1, the issue is that it doesn't have any apps that use the function. It should be part of the 'sharing' function.

The Snapdragon S4 processor in my Lumia 1020 supports WiFi direct (and hence Miracast), but MS barred x20 devices from having Miracast support on purpose. So, even if WP8.1 added WiFi direct support, not all devices have it. And since those devices that have Miracast, already support WiFi direct, they need to open the API for developers so that the 'sharing' isn't limited to audio/video from the device but also includes user files. (Integration of WiFi direct file sharing into the share charm like Bluetooth file sharing would be great!)

I think we have enough enthusiastic developers who might create such WiFi direct sharing apps (if the functionality comes as an app rather than the share charm) as soon as MS opens up. (Remember those numerous 3rd-party file managers which came soon after WP8.1 Developers' Preview?)
