A new kernel in WP 8 requires new hardware. Your WP 7 phone is as up-to-date as it will get.

The 5xx series of Lumias is really affordable. Tomorrow is Cyber-Monday (at least here in the US). You could probably find an online deal for a Lumia 520, 521 or 535 which makes the phone almost free, even off contract.
