Why is my Nokia Lumia 520 not working

Windows 8.1 update started on my phone but it has been running for the whole day (about 12 hours) I tried turning it on but every time I just see the spinning gears and then it shuts down again

Power it down and remove the SD card.

Plug into the AC charger, it will boot and let the update roll. If it gets stuck again do a soft reset. (Hold Volume Down + Power until the phone vibrates and then release the buttons.)

I would just plug it in to a charger. This happened to me once and the only way I stopped it was by shutting it down and then charging it.

Also, though, SD card is known to play havoc with some System Updates.
